Using iPhone maps app gps in airplane mode after starting travel on wifi?

I’ve not read any discussions on this but I wanted to contribute that it is possible to travel abroad in airplane mode if you use wifi to get your directions, then you take off from the wifi location in airplane mode.

Caveat! You must follow the GPS directions as once out of wifi it won’t reroute you! So if you make a wrong turn you have to get back on track or locate another wifi location.

i tested this here in the us and in Europe.

you don’t get as much detail of the surrounding areas because of being on airplane mode, but it works.
