The first thing to do is ensure that you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer because some older versions may not be able to talk with newer models of iPod. To do this you need to confirm the following: on iTunes' top bar menu, select Help/About iTunes and confirm which version of iTunes is mentioned. On the day of writing this, the latest version is 12.12.7.1. If it does not state this, try Help/Check for Updates to see if there is an update available. Note the following:
- if there is no mention of the currently installed version, or if the option Help/Check for Updates is not present, that suggests that you have downloaded iTunes from the Microsoft Store and in this case, it will be up to date
- if your version of iTunes is 12.10.11.2 (or earlier), that suggests that you have Windows 7 (or Windows 8) on your computer, in which case, you cannot install the latest version of iTunes and your iPod may not be able to communicate with iTunes
If you do have a suitable version of iTunes, but the iPod still isn't showing, have a read of this user tip from turningteest2: iOS device not showing in iTunes for Wind… - Apple Community and see if that resolves the issue.
