My old PC has very good internet speed, but my brand new imac 24'' only has a fraction of that speed. I've looked on the net and looked at the apple website, and tried lots of recommendations, but nothing seems to cure the problem.
The speed is so slow, that it's down to 2 mb/s. and my pc shows 15 mb/s.... it makes it virtually unusable for most things. Something is very wrong....CAN ANYONE HELP PLEASE.

Make a New Location, Using network locations in Mac OS X ...
System Preferences>Network, top of window>Locations>Edit Locations, little plus icon, give it a name.
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Sys Prefs>Network>highlight the Interface you're using>Advanced>TCP/IP>Configure IPv4: Using DHCP.
If using Wifi, instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
System Preferences>Network>choose interface>Advanced>Proxies Tab, make sure none are set, like for HTTP & HTTPS.
System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

Apply.

Is this slowness when in wireless mode, wired, or both? That is important for us to know.
Sometimes when adding a new device to our home network, I find I need to power-cycle the router/modem for full speeds to be reached. Power-cycling is unplugging the router/modem from wall power—NOT just using the power switch to power down.
If the fails to change the speed, a reset may help. With an Apple Silicon Mac like yours, all you need ot os turn off the then restart the computer.

I got the imac with pre loaded logic pro x do you think this large program has any detrimental effect on speed ??

If possible, could you take me through that again, in a simpler way, as though you're expaining this to a 5 yr old.
( I'm 73 and I'm not that familiar with this computer yet.)
Change DNS settings on Mac
