High Sierra google calendar with app password not working with calendar app

I realize google has security worries with older apple systems. I had my google calendar on the mac calendar app on my laptop running High Sierra. Google now will not allow both bail and calendar on same login as before. I got my mail using two level verification and a google app password. When I try to do the same with calendar, I either get the 400 error if I try to add a google calendar, or if I choose caldav, I get that my account had either had a bad account or password, using same account as gmail and a calendar password generated by google calendar app password. I really don't care if my calendar is that secure, but this sure is frustrating. I tried all the solutions I found online, now have shortcut to my browser page, but not really satisfactory. need some kind of solution.

I found a workaround. You can add your Google Calendar separately to your internet accounts by adding a CalDAV account and filling out the advanced options info. Overall, you need to:

  • Generate app specific password on google
  • System Preferences -> Internet Accounts -> Add CalDAV account
  • Set account type to Advanced
  • Set user name to google account (yourusername@gmail.com)
  • Set password to app specific password previously generated
  • Set server address to: https://calendar.google.com
  • Set server path to: /calendar/dav/yourusername@gmail.com/user/
  • Set port to: 443
  • Put a checkmark in: Use SSL
  • Leave "Use Kerberos" unchecked

This worked for me on High Sierra 10.13.6. Learned this on Reddit here - https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/uoui46/unable_to_set_up_caldav_with_apple_calendar_using/

Hi all-- I am dealing with the same issue: Using High Sierra (for various reasons) and cannot add Gmail or Google Calendar to Apple Mail or Apple Calendar. Thiis is a recent issue and only arose after a recent password change. Apparently Apple no longer considers the Google app ecosystem "secure" in High Sierra.

The Gmail issue is solvable by generating a Google "app password" in your Google account. First you have to create "2 step authorization" which will then allow the option to generate a special "app password." Then you create the new mail account using "Other mail account" instead of the Google mail option.

My issue is that using that method only shows the ability to sync MAIL and NOTES. Not Calendar (and a 4th option I forget...). See my screen shot. Then, if I try to add a CalDav Calendar account in Calendar it fails as per the above user.Anybody found a workaround?

You've tried all these?

Mac's Mail App is not as modern as iOS's Mail app, Many eMail providers now require a separate App Password different from your eMail password…

If it's an IMAP account, delete it in Sys Prefs Internet Accounts then use "Other" instead of gMail choice to add it.

Most likely biggest factor is using Other in Mail setup, then using a Browser that doesn’t have gMail PW stored init to get the App PW.

It might just need an App Password separate from the gMail password…

Yahoo App password…

Generate and manage third-party app passwords

Some older, third-party email apps (that do not use our Yahoo branded sign in page) require you to enter a single password for login credentials. To access your Yahoo Mail account on these apps, you'll need to generate and use an app password. An app password is a long, randomly generated code that gives a non-Yahoo app permission to access your Yahoo account. You’ll only need to provide this code once to sign in to your third-party email app.

Using app passwords with apps that don't support two-step verification (microsoft.com)

What about application passwords? Will that keep working?

If application passwords are being used for MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) along with basic auth as another auth mechanism, then when basic authentication is disabled, app passwords used for MFA will stop working too.

Where can I find more information?

Actually it's google not caring for the lack of security in older versions of Mac Mail, and not just google, most every eMail supplier. :)

And since Mail & Safari are both tied to the OS version, they get outdated in short order nowadays.

Here's the Choices in my 10.13.6 Internet Accounts...

Bit of a pain, but...

To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...

Open System Preferences>Users & Groups, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.

Does it work in the new account?

Good afternoon gbeekman,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

It sounds like you are having issues with Google Calendar and Mail. If you are able to upgrade your macOS operating system, that would most likely resolve your issues. macOS 13.3 was released today, Mar 27, 2023. Here is the link to Google support for help with their apps:
