Sound of iOS Alarm Clock of iPhone 13 mini barely audible on AirPods 3 or AirPods Pro 2

The sound of the alarm clock of my iPhone 13 mini is barely audible on my AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 3 of my wife. Because the issue is the same on both I suppose it must have an iOS related cause:

  • I checked the Alarm Clock setting and a sound is selected. Switching this sound to another doesn't solve the issue.
  • Using the Timer function provides the exact same result.
  • Volume for ringtones and alerts is on and set to a correct volume in the 'Sounds and haptics' control panel. When tested there, the selected sound (my ringtone) is also barely audible through my AirPods Pro 2.
  • Music and/or Podcasts and all other sources are played at a normal volume when used.
  • Restarting my iPhone doesn't solve the issue.
  • Restoring my iPhone tho the latest backup - made long before the issue occurred - doesn't solve the issue.
  • Switching my AirPods Pro 2 between my iPhone 13 mini and MacBook Pro 16" M1 is set to 'automatic'. Switching this to 'This iPhone when last used' doesn't solve the issue.
  • Other notification sounds like 'New voicemail', 'New email', 'Send email' are played as expected on my AirPods Pro 2.
  • As far as I know there is no separate or specific volume setting only for the Alarm Clock app anywhere within iOS (other than the general 'Volume for ringtones and alerts' in the 'Sounds and haptics' control panel).

Not noticeable hearing the Alarm Clock (and Timer Alarm) on my AirPods Pro 2 while listening to music or podcasts makes me missing these cues which is annoying an causing problems.

Please advise.

Hey Jeff_W,

We appreciate you clarifying that for us. Looking back over the steps you have tried, we didn't see the steps below mentioned and recommend giving them a try.

Apple just released iOS 16.4 and if you haven't already, back up your iPhone, then update the software. If needed, see Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support.

Have you checked to make sure the firmware is updating on the AirPods? This link will show you how, About firmware updates for AirPods - Apple Support.

There are settings in the Accessibility feature for sound and headphones. See this link to learn where to verify these settings, Adjust headphone audio settings on iPhone - Apple Support.

If you are still having trouble with not hearing the alarm, try another Bluetooth earphones to test the alarm with. This will help narrow down where to look next.

Take care!
