Gmail Notifications

How do I get gmail notifications to appear on my desktop?

To clarify, I access gmail through a browser window (Safari), not my email client (Mac Mail). I’d like to get notifications of incoming emails on my desktop, so I don’t have to constantly navigate to gmail in Safari to see if I have any new messages. I have gmail set up to get notifications, and I have Safari set up to get notifications, but I still don’t get them. Any insight is appreciated ………

To make sure I understand, you are logged into Google and have the Gmail site on a tab or window and still not getting a notification.

On the Mac side, which alert type do you have set for Safari at  > System Settings > Notifications > Safari?

The most likely cause is on the Gmail side. In the Desktop Notifications section, I assume you have "New Mail Notifications" already selected. Now click the link just above it that says: "Click here to enable desktop notifications for Gmail".

Hi KID-A,

The first thing to note is that not every website can provide or offer notifications that you'll view on your Mac. For those that do, the page Customize website notifications in Safari on Mac outlines the steps to ensure those are enabled on your computer. This article also appears to outline the steps necessary to obtain those notifications and indicates they will occur "when you're signed in to Gmail and have it open in your browser":

Hi Mac Jim ID – Thanks for replying. Responses:

  • Yes: I’m logged into Google and have gmail opened in a tab.
  • On the Mac side, all of my Safari notification options are toggled to the “on” position.
  • I have no link that reads “click here to enable notifications for Gmail.”
  • I have something that reads “Note: Notifications have been disabled in this browser” (see attached file). (Clicking “learn more” is no help – it links to the same page about how to turn on notifications.)

Who — or what — disabled notifications on this browser? It wasn’t me or my employer (whose alerts I need to get).
