Can't add an email account using mac Apple Mail ( or any mail client )

Version 16 Apple Mail on macOS 12.6.3

I'm unable to add my primary email account after deleting it.

Checked with ISP ( Cox ) and all is good and can log on to account via Cox's webmail ( although it does require two-step verification - sending me a code via text message ) and the account is usable. Cox says nothing is locked out and claims the issue is with the Apple Mail client app. Tried it with another app ( Postbox ) and it also fails.


The IMAP settings for incoming and outgoing mail server are correct and Apple Mail echoes them back when displaying the failure message.


The failure message when adding ( after pressing the "Sign in" button ) is "Unable to verify account name or password". TIA for any clues.

We found this guide on the Cox Support website: Cox Email Server Settings


According to this guide, make sure you're entering your user name as the first part of your Cox email address, without @cox.net. For example, if your email address is customer@cox.net, your username would be "customer".


If you're experiencing the same issue with both your iMac and another mail client, it's safe to focus our efforts on your Cox account settings and details. If you're still unable to add your email address back to Mail on your Mac, we urge you to continue working with Cox Support for a resolution.

Ah Ali- thanks for the response. Wish it were that simple.

All settings are correct. Now even Cox's webmail fails. Emails are received in the webmail inbox but cannot send replies or forward them. After pressing the "send" button the following message shows up( and it is just a small text message, so the "too large" is not true - it fails for any size message - and yes there is plenty of storage remaining in my Cox allocation ):
