most drives are either NOT initialized for Mac, or are already initialized for Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) which is not writeable natively on MacOS.

Best practice is to ERASE a new Drive completely in Disk Utility. Selecting it by its immutable manufacturer-given device-name and choosing ERASE.

For that Mac, defaults should be GUID partition Scheme and Apple File System (APFS) for most purposes. once a Mac volume is created, it will Mount automatically.
