Unable to add Exchange account to iPhone. "That microsoft account doesn't exist. Enter a different account or get a new one"

Attempting to add my Microsoft Exchange account to my iPhone fails with the message:

That Microsoft account doesn't exist. Enter a different account or get a new one.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Settings>Mail>Accounts>Add Account>Outlook.com
  2. The Microsoft Sign in page appears and I enter my Outlook email address. The following message appears in red text: "That Microsoft account doesn't exist. Enter a different account or get a new one".

Also: I am able to sign into the account on my Mac. The Outlook calendar and mail work fine. My iPhone and Mac are logged into the same iCloud account and my iCloud email and Google account are synched with no problems. The Outlook account neither syncs with nor is able to be added to the iPhone.

Any thoughts?
