Ventura 13.3 broke my screensaver--

Upgraded last night. Now screen saver won't appear on the main display, just on the extended display. After a while, the words "No Picture" appear on the main display.

I am seeing the same problem in two different M1 MacBook Pros (one a work machine) since 13.3. Whenever they are connected to an external monitor, it was refusing to show photos on that monitor. This happens with any of the photo-display screensavers that I tried (flip-up, Ken Burns. Photo Mobile, Photo Wall etc).

By experimenting a bit, I discovered that whichever monitor is the designated the “Main Display” will refuse to show photos, and show the “no photos“ message. The clock, however, appears just fine on that monitor, when that option is enabled. The “Extended Display” shows photos just fine, even when switched to the other monitor.

I was able to work around the problem by changing the refresh rate of the MacBook ”Built-in Display” to anything other than”ProMotion.”

System Settings > Displays > Built-in Display > Refresh rate > [select something other than ProMotion]

After updating to Ventura 13.3, my Mac will flicker black twice during startup. Once during the loading bar after the Apple logo appears, and again about 7 seconds after reaching the login screen. Have you experienced this issue as well?

Shutting down and restarting more than once is always advised after any upgrade or update...

If you have an ongoing issue— try reinstalling the macOS on top of the existing macOS

Me too. Mac Studio, Ventura 13.3, Studio Display, and a ViewSonic 32" additional monitor. Selecting a file of photos and invoking screen saver either via the Control Panel or Corner Hot Point blackens the Studio Display while the ViewSonic displays the contents of the folder. Once the randomize kicks in, the Studio Display show "No Photo".

Interestingly, if I repeatedly invoke the screen saver via Hot Corner, after three or four attempts, the Studio Display shows the contents of the folder. It might take several attempts to invoke.

Initially, I had a flicker issue with the ViewSonic but may have resolved that after much effort.

I am having a similar problem since updating to 13.3.1 on my Mac Studio with three monitors - a Samsung 27" curved as my main display, a 2011-vintage Vizio 24" TV, and a Wacom Cintiq 24" as my extended displays.

I was able to run Flying Toasters screensavers on all three displays just fine prior to update. Now I get three black screens, even trying different versions of the screensaver (but it will still show the clock overlay!). Sometimes during initial preview the screensaver will display but only on the Cintiq, which is connected to the Mac Studio w/USB-C, while the other displays are connected via HDMI. Other third-party screensaver modules are also affected, such as SaveHollywood.

Same here with a 14" MBP M2 2023.

BUT:

  • first I tried in a normal way; I selected the pic folder and got nothing after several "Preview" tests
  • then I pressed and kept ALT-key down. Because why not. I pressed also "Preview". PICTURES! WOW! But only in a secondary display.

And when I tested preview again without ALT; it showed pictures only every fourth times. 3 out of 4 times were with a black screen.

Then I trashed screensaver preferences from User/Library. And found out that there were some old prefs from iLife hanging around ;-)

Tested with preview; totally random results. First 2 times ok, one no go, then 1 ok, 2 no go etc.

Then I trashed prefs from HD/Library. Same thing

Results; it works randomly in a secondary display about 40% of times. I have not tested by leaving the saver on for a longer time.

It is still defective. You can initiate the screen saver from Preview in System settings / screen saver ... however after a period of time it will revert to the blank screen . on a normal screen saver engage after any set time it will occasionally show photos but revert to a blank screen

IT IS STILL DEFECTIVE. Mac OS 13.4 DID NOT FIX THE ISSUE

UNFORTUNATE

I should add:

Screen Saver works properly the first time it's summoned after a startup or reboot. Every subsequent attempt to run it results in proper behavior on the extended monitor, black screen on the main monitor, and after a bit the words "No Photos" (not No Picture, sorry) appear in white in the middle and sit there, unmoving. Which is not the best failure mode for a screensaver, I gotta say.

Glad it's not just me. The screensaver I'm running is one I wrote, Folder Crazy (it's on armpitstudios dot com). Now that I'm on 13.3, it stopped running on the main screen (Studio Display), and usually works on display 2 (Thunderbolt Display), but not always.

I added some more logging to my code. The initWithFrame:isPreview: method is usually called for both screens, but sometimes not 1. But startAnimation is now never called for screen 1.

I wonder if they only broke legacy screensavers (those that run in the process called legacyScreenSaver).
