How do I change the international dialling access code on iPhone 12

I have moved from Australia to UK and changed my country in the Apple Store settings. When texting an international number, the phone translates the ‘+’ in front of the country code to ‘0011’ which is the Australian international dialling code. Even when I delete a contact and re enter it as 00 [the correct international dialling access in the UK )instead of ‘+’, when I send a text it converts it back to ‘+’ and then tries to send it to 0011 plus the country code. This means I can’t send international texts at all.

this happened last time I came to the UK and seemed to be solved by entering the phone numbers manually in contact with 00 instead of plus but this no longer works, it just converts the 00 back to a + when sending the text which then translated that to 0011!

my phone was purchased in Australia as I lived there . There must be a way round this!

To change the international dialing access code on your iPhone 12, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Phone app on your iPhone 12.
  2. Tap the keypad icon at the bottom of the screen to open the phone dialer.
  3. Enter the access code you want to use instead of the default one. For example, if you want to use "011" as the access code instead of "00," enter +1 (Cellular Number) for the USA or +91 (Mobile Number) for India on the keypad.
  4. Note; If you are dialling a Landline number you have to use an Area Code as well. For example If you want to call Pune India from the USA then Use +91 (20) - Landline Number. DO NOT add space, hyphen or parenthesis while entering a mobile or landline number. An iPhone will add these spaces and other characters based on the internation prefix added.

Note that changing the international dialing access code may affect how you make international calls. Be sure to check with your carrier or service provider to ensure that you are using the correct access code and that there are no additional charges for using a different access code.

I think I may not have explained my problem well.

I have a contact which I have entered manually as 0061 xxxxxxxxx in contacts.

when I choose this contact and send a message, it converts it to +61 xxxxxxxxx

this in turn dials 001161 xxxxxxxxx which doesn’t work from the UK.

it’s not the country code I need to change but need to stop my phone translating +61 into 001161
