Results from attempting to obtain the education discount in person without actually being student are wildly variable. Apple reserves the right to ask for supporting documentation. (Sometimes all that is required is an .edu email address.)

There is no educational discount on AppleCare PLUS, but for a device that is designed to be moved about in daily use, you should NOT consider it optional unless you are prepared to cough up US$800 for a major repair at a moments notice. You have only 60 days to add AppleCare PLUS, then it becomes permanently unavailable to you.
