Solution to "Screen Capture highlight won't disappear"

"Others have asked this Q but those answers have not helped me. When I take a screenshot (CMD/Shift/5) the screen is dulled except for a window identifying the shot. Click the spacebar or Enter and the image is stored as a .png. So far, so good. But then the dulling/highlight-window remains. The only way to get rid of them is to restart my MacBook Pro (Mojave 10.14.6).

I've checked the Screen Capture options and I've tried a restart in Safe mode. "

It is a 99.98% chance that it is in recording, Do Cmd+Shift+5 to get the floating menu and stop it, the 0.02% is to disable floating menu from the options (shown under 'Cmd+Shift+5').

You can entirely dismiss the Screen Capture (⇧⌘5) facility by pressing the esc (escape) key. This will also eliminate any screen recording in progress.
