Screen Capture highlight won't disappear

It appears this question was asked at least two times before, but there was never a solution. Now it's happening to me in May of 2023. When I use Sh-Cmd-5 I am able to successfully capture a portion of the screen, but the "screen capture highlight" won't go away until I restart the computer. I have a MacBook Pro M1 with the latest updates. And no, pressing "Esc" does not help. Here's an example of what it looks like, it does this every time now, so now I have to restart again!

It's me again, I kept playing around and I think I just figured it out. When I 'Cmd-Sh-5'... on the menu that pops up there are two icons (in the center) I never noticed before. Instead of taking a screenshot... they start recording... and that's is why the highlight doesn't go away. Apparently I accidentally selected one of the 'recording' icons and every time I opened the app again it defaulted to that, and just now when I selected one of the icons to the left the screenshot worked as it always has.

So, I guess I solved my own problem, I hope this entry helps someone else who has been struggling with this issue.
