Hi dummyidsmo1986,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We understand that you're having an issue with getting messages on your MacBook Air. We'd like to help.
Let's start off by making sure that you have Messages set up correctly on all your devices. Set up iCloud for Messages on all your devices - Apple Support
This resource would help you check all devices and below will help with your Mac specifically:
Set up iCloud for Messages on your Mac
1. In the Messages app on your Mac, do one of the following:
* macOS Ventura: Choose Messages > Settings, click iMessage, then select Enable Messages in iCloud.
* macOS 12 or earlier: Choose Messages > Preferences, click iMessage, then select Enable Messages in iCloud.
2. Select which email addresses and phone numbers you want to send and receive messages from on your Mac.
3 Any messages currently stored in iCloud are now accessible on your Mac, and any new messages you receive on your Mac will be stored in iCloud.
4. Note: If you want to see SMS and MMS messages on your Mac, see the Apple Support article Forward SMS/MMS text messages from your iPhone to your Mac or iPad.
5. To see Messages stored in iCloud, open the Messages app.
Note: If you want to turn off Messages in iCloud on your Mac, deselect Enable Messages in iCloud. You can choose to disable Messages in iCloud for all your devices, or just your Mac.
For more information on how to use Messages on your Mac, see the Send a message on Mac.
Let us know if that helps.
Cheers!

dummyidsmo1986,
To help isolate the specific issue you may be experiencing with messages on your Mac as your messages stay up to date automatically when using the same Apple ID and Messages in iCloud, can you tell us if you're seeing any error message? If you go to Messages > Settings, click iMessage, click Settings, then click Sync Now, does the issue continue?
Thank you.
This is the answer that is widely available using Google and it doesn’t work.
