Severe Eye Strain due to OLED PWM Dimming

Hello , i have been using iphone for 10 years or so and with changes after iphone X which uses OLED , i am really unable to use my iphone due to PWM dimming which causes severe migraine and dizziness for me in 5mins. I have been stuck on iphone 11 due to LCD panels but i am worried whats going to happen in future since LCD is gone now. Can Apple implement DC dimming via software Update? i have tried 14 pro and it had same problems even though flicker has been reduced but doesnt help. I tried every accessibility option like reduce white point , keeping 100% brightness.

  1. I don't believe we're going to get DC dimming for OLED screens as updates.
  2. For those who don't understand what PWM is and how it affects a small groups of people, before asking them to go see an eye doctor, at least read a few articles about how PWM affects their eyes, and in some cases, dizziness and vertigo. Here is a start: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Why-Pulse-Width-Modulation-PWM-is-such-a-headache.270240.0.html
  3. Currently only iPhone SE 3 have LCD screens. The plain iPhone 11 is the last big display iPhone that have LCD and users who are affect by pwm can only use these 2 phones (that is if they can buy an iPhone 11 model). Note that iPhone 11 Pro & Pro Max uses OLED. And any thing from 12 onwards uses OLED.
  4. I am in the same boat as you because I am also affected by the pwm. If apple changes everything to OLED then I just have to say goodbye to iPhone. We are such a small group and I don't think they really care.

I had the iPhone 8 then went to the 12, lasted a few weeks and got rid of it due to the unbearable headaches, then went to the 11, all good. Went to the 15, (great phone) lasted a few weeks then the severe headaches and eye pain came back, it’s really bad, now back on the 11. If all that’s required is a dimming feature that Samsung has why wouldn’t Apple? Really shocking, when the 11 stops being supported and it’s not fixed it’ll have to be Samsung, assuming they have really dealt with the issue.

So Apple yet again in 2024 are ignoring eye health with using OLED screens again. Why isnt this subject being addressed by Apple? Do they not care about eye health? Even if someone doesnt feel the effects of PWM eye strain their eye health is degrading because of it. Ive sent several emails to Apple and not once had a reply. Looks like another year with my LED SE

The problem you have affects a very, very small number of people. Realistically, Apple is not going to change their entire product line for that small a number any more than they are going to make all Watches nickel-free to accommodate people with nickel allergies or make the ear tips for AirPods out of something other than silicone, even though there are people with silicone allergies. Nor would it be cost-effective for them to make a small number of phones with a different screen type that a small number of people require.

I'm not saying it's "fair," but it is the way things work.

Done. I really hope Apple will at least acknowledge this is problem for some users. I desperately need a new phone. I won’t buy another than iPhone. I don’t want the SE. I want the IPhone pro max. Hence why I purchased one. It’s beyond frustrating.

FYI I have zero health issues and am young fit and healthy. Also never had this issue before and have never worn or needed glasses etc.

Cheers.

Apple keep deleting my posts on replies to topics with regards to this issue. It’s frustrating. I feel like they are actively removing my posts. These will be gone within half an hour!

I don’t know they are deleting. I’m probably going to get banned I’ve done nothing wrong? I love Apple but this deleting of my posts is not ok.

Don’t think the 15 models are any better! I tried the Plus for 3 days. Seemed like it was better but then my headaches and eye strain came back. Really was hoping it would be better but it’s not. Went back to the 11. Looks like I may be jumping ship to Samsung soon if they don’t update a dimming solution or make an LCD phone for us sensitive eye people

Also I noticed if you use another phone camera and hold it to an OLED screen phone with a white screen you can see the lines scrolling down on OLED phone! I noticed the lines kinda disappear when brightness is lowered to about 50%. But everyone else says keep brightness at 100% the use white point. Really didn’t do much for me. I’m willing to try and buy another 15 and try something else if anyone has any ideas, even though if it doesn’t work I have to pay a $50 restocking fee!

any suggestions?!?!

For me the 15 PM has been the most tolerable of the OLED displays. Unfortunately it is not perfect. There are times where I feel discomfort in the back of my neck at the base of the head, eyes get slightly strained with prolonged use, a little eye fatigue. But it isn't like other OLED displays where it was pure suffering. I have several more days before my return window is up and I don't know what I will do. This is the first time that I feel the age of my 11. I love the cameras, speakers, brightness, battery, and higher storage capacity. Decisions.

I have left feedback so many times I lost count. I've been active in a long-going thread about this issue in MacRumors. That single thread is 404 pages, has 10k+ replies, and over 1 million views should you ever care to check it out. I've been using the 15 PM since Dec 7th and I can say the symptoms haven't become any worse. Intermittent is how I would describe it.
