Does icloud email still support other email carriers like gmail and comcast?

I have Comcast and Gmail accounts and have been able to use them with the Apple email app for many years. In the past several months (since the last big update?), folks will send me emails to my .mac address. When I just hit reply, the reply automatically comes from either Comcast or Gmail! This surprised me as I always took for granted that a message from ANY email service automatically replied to using the SAME service. This problem of course is quite annoying and confusing to my business customers who only know my .mac account.
