Ipod square nano (6th gen)

I have an old iPod nano 6th gen - as in the touchscreen ones in the shape of a square. It used to be connected to my mother's account and on the top it shows "hername's iPod" but now I want to change it to be mine. How do I reset the entire iPod? when I connect it to my laptop with the USB adapter my windows laptop does not recognise it as a device and it does not show up in iTunes as a device near the music box. Do I need to manually remove the iPod from her account? what do I do if I don't know how to add songs to it. Please help.

Have you had the chance to restart both the iPod nano and your computer?
Have you had the chance to try a different cable to connect your iPod nano to your computer?
