MacBook Pro 2017, A1708, fan starts and stops

Hi there

Helping a friend with this MBP. The fan is crazy. Speeds up and stops, all the time. Just restarted. No apps open. Just cleaned it.

Installed Macs Fan Control. I can there see the speed are crazy. Wondering if this is an electroc problem, fan problem or something.

Sometimes it speeds up while the Fan Control says 0 rpm.

I recorded a video to show how it behaves. Temerature is low. Everything is normal. But the fan starts and stops constantly.

Try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected.

Try booting into Safe Mode. Disconnect all external devices in case one of them is causing a problem.

You can also try an SMC Reset and a PRAM Reset (hold the PRAM Reset for two chimes if possible).

Sounds like it will most likely be a bad Logic Board...my guess possible liquid damage (I see a lot of laptops with liquid damage while supporting our organization's laptops). Could possibly be a bad fan, but most fan issues I've encountered have been due to bad bearings or physical damage.

Thanks for the answer. Haven’t tried the Diagnostics. Have done the SMC reset, no change. Nothing connected. Runs on idle. With the Fan Control app I see all temperatures. 30-50°C. The fan runs smooth sometimes, and then you can’t hear it. So nothing wrong with the bearings. I’ve opened it. Can’t see any liquid damage.

I also fear something wrong with the Logic Board ☹️
