Sound won’t play from my AirPods when connected

I’ve had my AirPods (generation 2) for about two or three years now I believe. They’ve worked perfectly and I love them. I started having an issue with the case a few months ago, it wouldn’t stay charged at all; which in return, wouldn’t charge my AirPods. I could turn a blind eye. But now I’m facing an issue where whenever I connect my AirPods to my phone, the headphone by the time shows, it makes the little sound to show you it’s connected, but the sound doesn’t connect at all. It’ll play only through the external phone speaker and not the AirPods. I have made sure they’re charged, reset my Bluetooth, and removed and reconnected my AirPods to Bluetooth but nothing is working. I have an iPhone 8 Plus if that matters. Very upset because all of this happened out of seemingly nowhere.

Hello Kykybug,

We understand sound isn't coming from your AirPods. We suggest making sure the iPhone you have them paired to is running the latest iOS version, as this will ensure your AirPods firmware stays updated. You can find steps for updating your iPhone, as well as information about AirPods firmware below:

If your iPhone is updated and your AirPods have the latest firmware version, try resetting your AirPods using the following steps. Resetting your AirPods can resolve charging and other unexpected issues.

1. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and close the lid.
2. Wait 30 seconds.
3. Open the lid of your charging case, and put your AirPods in your ears.
4. Go to Settings > Bluetooth. Or go to Settings > [your AirPods].
* If your AirPods appear there as connected, tap the More Info button  next to your AirPods, tap Forget This Device, then tap again to confirm.
* If your AirPods don't appear there, continue to the next step.
7. Put your AirPods in their charging case, and keep the lid open.
8. Press and hold the setup button on the back of the case for about 15 seconds, until the status light on the front of the case flashes amber, then white.*
9. AirPods charging cases
10. Reconnect your AirPods: With your AirPods in their charging case and the lid open, place your AirPods close to your iPhone or iPad. Follow the steps on your device's screen.
