Updating Apple Watch taking 16 hours, then 3, then 9 etc etc

Just went to pair Apple Watch Series 6 in absolute mint condition less than a year old to my iPhone 8+

my son bought ULTRA and gave me this ( yes, he wiped it clean and reset I)

-updated iPhone to most recent software being 16.4

have watch on charger

started the pair -

looked to have been going fine, consented to all the permissions, chose my preferences… until I went to set a watch face then it said applewatch needed to be updated…

ok, followed instructions, watch on charger, connected to fastest Wi-Fi money can buy here and watch said 1 day, then 16 hours, then 9 and finally settled on 3 hours where it sat and sat and sat…………

so I’ve canceled the update, unpaired the watch.

should I just start again - or do something different?

iPhone 8 Plus, iOS 16

Hello Pilot531,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If we understand correctly, you are unable to setup your Apple Watch, as the updating process was taking longer than expected. To help with this, please see if these steps from the Apple resource on updating an Apple Watch help your situation:

"Need more help with updating?
Try these steps:
1. Make sure that your Apple Watch is connecting properly to its charger
2. Restart your Apple Watch.
3. Restart your paired iPhone.
4. Try again to update your Apple Watch.
If the update won't start:
1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone.
2. Tap General > Software Update.
3. Delete the update file.
4. Try again to update your Apple Watch.
Learn what to do if you see 'Cannot Install Update' when updating Apple Watch or if your Apple Watch says you need more available storage to install a watchOS update."
