Why can't I search files on Time Machine disk?

Hi all!

Spotlight doesn't give any result.

I did a test with a file that I first found on my TM drive, then I did a search with its name and nothing.

I even tried with a little application (EasyFind) and nothing.

What it the problem here? I really don't get it.

Thanks!

If it is the new APFS backup scheme, there aren’t really files there, just snapshots. The Finder will mount the snapshots when you open them so you see the files, but I don’t think they can be indexed. You should be able to search them in the Time Machine interface.

If you run the /Applications/TIme Machine.app, it will provide you a timeline and a Finder-like window on your Time Machine drive from which you can use QuickLook to view certain file contents, and a search window from which to initiate Spotlight queries. Then, at your discretion, you can select and choose to restore a particular file or folder — or nothing at all.

I don't use Time Machine because I consider it to be difficult and 'unfriendly'. I use Carbon Copy Cloner for backing up. One of its features is that it provides a complete backup of your hard drive's current configuration in 'real time'. That means that it is a copy and everything is displayed as it is on your HD. Very easy to find something. It also has a number of important features not found in Time Machine.
