New Safari Issue Rendering Images (April 2023)

Either Safari or MacOS has had a recent update that causes images to sporadically fail to render .

See examples.

Regular render.

Periodic problems like this.

There is a difference between rendering the same page in a 'Private Window' and regular.

The rendering image also appears to be mostly the still images that are presented for video content.

It has happened with just regular news images (not video) as well, but more frequently for video link stills.

Updating software and rebooting does not repair the issue.

Did not have this issue prior to March 2023 as far as I can recall.

Network is good. Video renders ok. It's just still images on news web pages, sometimes Netflix, Prime, BBC, Wall Street Journal, etc.. Not specific to any one service provider as far as I can tell.

Last week I upgraded my MBP from MacOS Monterey 12.6.7 to MacOS Ventura 13.5. So far, it seems to have fixed the problem. I wasn't able to reproduce the image problem with the same websites.

Still, I think Apple needs to fix this problem for other MacOS versions. Keep sending them feedback:

Dear colleagues,

I have installed version 16.5 (17615.2.9.11.6, 17615). The latest version. And I still have this problem.

On my iMac macOS Monterey 12.6.6 (21G646).

I think it could also be a virus. Because after I deleted the volume and reinstalled Monterey, Safari works for a short time. After Safari was synced (bookmarks iCloud), the virus could also be on the bookmarks. Just an idea

Did exactly this. Unfortunately not fixing the problem.

  • default display settings: no fix
  • disable lazy loading: no fix
  • disable extensions: no fix
  • dns changes: no fix (why should this even work?)

Curious to know if anyone with MacOS Ventura experiences this problem.

Some of us at least have let them know our concerns - in great detail - and still no solutions. My personal hunch is some connection to the Intel machines as I see little comment from Apple Silicon users. Alternatively, it's GPU related as the distortion of images is reminiscent of such problems in the past.

Someone, somewhere has just kicked the can down the road which is very disappointing.

It would be disappointing if this isn't resolved. The last point update of a MacOS version is usually solid. If Big Sur ends with 11.7.9 and this graphics issue in Safari is not resolved, that would mean lots of old Intel Macs will run the web with this issue popping up. I already have problems with this point update running hot on my MacBook Air when running YouTube. Many versions back, Big Sur was better and ran pretty cool.

I was hoping todays Monterey update to 12.7 and safari update to 16.6.1 would finally resolve the issues. But no, absolutely nothing has changed. I wonder if folks with an "apple chip M1/M2" MacBook running MacOS Ventura have the same problems. I have a feeling this is localized to MacBooks with intel chips, that can only run MacOS Monterey. If any M1/M2 chip users with MacOS Ventura, have the same problem kindly let us know.
