iMac login page displays an additional user labelled other

The login page on my iMac shows an additional user which is greyed out. This is not visible in the systems user accounts. Is this malware? How can I remove it

And you never enabled Root?

The solution to this is to Disable Root User. To do that, go to:

System Preferences > Users & Groups > Unlock Button (and put in password) > Login Options > Network Account Server: click "Join" > Open Directory Utility > Unlock Button (and put in password) > Edit Menu (at the top) > DISABLE ROOT USER

Once you've done that, the Other... user should be gone from the login screen.

Alternatively, you can get to Directory Utility using Spotlight (command + spacebar) then typing Directory Utility, and pressing enter.

I'm unable to boot into Ventura at this time to look there, sorry, but yeah, think you're right on that.

See if you have unknown Profiles.

To remove a configuration profile in macOS:

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences....
  2. From the View menu in System Preferences, select Profiles.Note:
  3. Profiles won't be visible until you have at least one profile installed.
  4. Select the profile you want to remove, and then press the - (minus) button. Click Remove to remove the profile.

I received an email to an old ntlworld account that I do not use but not able to close claiming I had been hacked and Trojan put on my devices. Two old internet sites linked to this email with the same password were hacked judging by the email traffic generated. I closed both of these accounts and changed the password on the ntlworld account and informed virgin media. Neither my iMac or iPad is showing any signs of being hacked apart from this ‘other’ user on the Mac. The other user has been around for a few weeks. Cannot remember when it appeared . It may have after an operating system upgrade
