For a desktop computer like an iMac, I cannot emphasis enough the importance of getting a POWERED hub (has an independent power supply). Most of the low-cost "bus-powered" hubs (must rob power from the computer) are too underpowered to drive anything other than a mouse and keyboard. I have some that cannot even power a USB flash drive.
What kind fo devices are you wanting to add? That may help us better suggest solutions.

These are designed for iMacs. Mine did not come with the external power supply so I bought it separately. What I paid for the hub and the power supply was roughly what the newer model costs with the supply included. It also provides more port options than mine. It is a very unobtrusive solution and I am happy with mine.
