I've never used Spotify, but from what I have read Spotify is not supported by iMovie, and therefore one cannot add a Spotify song to iMovie. Spotify is a streaming service and therefore any song used in an app would first need to be downloaded to your Mac, if that is allowed by the service. However, Spotify songs are in a protected special format, called Ogg Vorbis, that is not a format supported by iMovie. Assuming no violation of copyrights, any downloaded song would need to be converted to aiff, AAC, wav, or Mp3 that are supported by iMovie.
In any event, iMovie does not have a playlist feature.
I will certainly defer to anyone who has used Spotify and has successfully imported Spotify songs into iMovie.
