I have had my Time Machine since 2019. Worked great. Now my Time Machine appears to be dead. When plugged in, no light signal, nothing. My Mac cannot find it, apparently because the Time Machine is not alive. Resusitate? Or replace it?

A 2019 Time Capsule is not that old, so replacing the internal power supply might be an option. The problem here is that Apple does not offer parts or service options for the Time Capsule.

Unfortunately, the Time Capsule was not designed for ease of service, but an independent shop could probably handle a power supply replacement for you if they can find the parts that would be needed for the repair. Estimate of parts and labor would be in the $200-250 range.

No other manufacturer ever offered a product exactly like the Time Capsule, which combined a wireless router and a hard drive in one package, so a direct replacement for the Time Capsule would not be possible.

If you already have another Wi-Fi router, the simplest solution would be to add a USB drive and connect it directly to your Mac for Time Machine backups.

Hi Bob

Thank you for your suggestions and help. I have also talked with Apple support for ideas and, as usual, they were great to talk with and offered suggestions. I don't need more storage, just backup for my Mac "in case".

I am not a techie, so this is challenging for me. I just want to have the backup, preferably as similar to the Time Capsule as possible. I had a separate wifi address for my Time Capsule and would, every 2 weeks or so, connect to that Time Capsule wifi address and set the Mac to backup to the Time Capsule during the night. Perfect...

I was recommended to look at a Western Digital "MyCloudHouse" machine for a new backup. However, after reading about it, I think it requires a connection directly into my wifi router. I'm a bit paranoid about outsiders intercepting or accessing my data (hence I prefer not to use the cloud) and so a direct connection to my wifi router is a bit concerning to me.

Any additional observations or suggestions are welcome.

Thanks,

M
