Customising the Credits Title?

I have a couple of questions here.

  1. The Credits title in the Titles pane is no longer in its default state. As you can see from the screenshot it is partly filled in with my name and production company. I must have done this but cannot remember when or how. How can I return it to its default appearance?

2. There are 4 backgrounds provided. Is there any way I can produce a background of my choice by disabling the default ones?

The default version of the "Trailer" Title should be located in the Credits category. (I believe it was originally developed for iMovie, but "appeared" somewhere along the line in FCPX.) If you made an alternative version in Motion, then your version would be automatically renamed "Trailer copy" (unless you gave the edited version a custom name.)

This title can be something of a nightmare to deal with... mixing fonts and sizes like that, trying to keep line spacing "straight", etc., so...

If this is something you need to use rather often, then I would like to submit, as a suggestion, this alternative:

It's main feature is each piece of text is its own "object" and labels (like executive producer) can be "stacked" - formatting is as simple as dragging the text - all lines are "auto-aligned" to the center - you cannot mess up the line spacing - and there is an accessory font containing MPAA Ratings tags and parts (including laurels and Closed Caption icons [*Use responsibly*]).

The checkbox shows up under the Background selection in the Titles inspector in FCP.

My checkbox doesn't toggle the background, however.

It seems that one state is "recorded" in Edit Mode in Motion, but the other state doesn't stick. Hence, the checkbox doesn't work... for me... ;-)

Instead of using the Edit Mode, simply add the Background > Properties > Blending > Opacity to the Checkbox widget. At one state, set the Opacity to 0; at the other state, set the Opacity to 100%. Name the Checkbox appropriately (like "Show Background" or "Hide Background", etc... depending on how you see its function or how you want to implement the show/hide.) [EDIT: to add a parameter to a widget - right-click on its name in the inspector, then select Add to Rig > Rig > "widget name"].

Whatever other incidental additions you have to the Checkbox widget - just right click and "Remove from widget name". You can change the name of the Widget by double clicking its name in the Layers List and typing a new one, OR, you can publish Checkbox and go into the Project Publishing pane, double click on and edit the name there.

@Ian — if you successfully turn off the background, then the entire screen will appear ALL BLACK because the bloody text is all black and black is the (default) "color" of transparency in Motion. Save the Template with the background ON and test it in Final Cut to see if the background becomes transparent with the text still in place (... it will ...).

Thanks, Fox. Before trying what you suggested I watched Mark Spencer's "Motion Magic in Under 60 Minutes".

Not being very familiar with Motion, I was trying to select the Background widget in the Rig, or the "Show Background" checkbox and then locate a way to add the Opacity. Spent over 30 minutes trying to figure things out. Then, I chose the Background layer group and selected the Properties tab. Then, added the Opacity to the "Show Background" checkbox widget. Got things to work.

Next thing I'll try is to maybe replace the Background layers with a color generator, which can be turned on and off and publish its color. Don't really need the iMovie backgrounds.

I could always turn off the Background permanently like Ian did, but I'd like to build on it instead. I wish I had a bit more time to learn Motion... ;-)

Published parameters should appear there.

I can only guess that perhaps you are looking at an older version. When making changes to a template in Motion, those already in the timeline in FCP do not reflect those changes. First make sure to save the changes in Motion; then in FCP drag the title from the browser over the one in ghe timeline and choose Replace. The newly published parameters should now appear.

They do match . . . there is nothing there!

I am obviously misunderstanding at least one of the instructions which I know from my own experience of teaching others is very easy to do when the person is remote from you.

The whole process is obviously extremely simple in the whole scheme of things but I must be making a glaringly simple mistake or assumption.
