Likely, but what makes you think you have Malware?

I'd run this on the older one & let us see the report...

We need to see what all is running, a report from this will not display any personal info...

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

Keep Security Software Off of your Mac.

It just gets in the way, and is sometimes un-installable. If you need to update sometimes, then its Firewall Settings or VPN may just get in the way.

But...

Scan with Malwarebytes for Mac:

Start with running a scan for malware, using Malwarebytes for Mac and remove what is found. Perhaps something is installed? Remove what is found from the quarantine. Malware is short for: Malicious Software, which makes you computer act in a mislead manor. This is software that was first developed by longtime users of these forums, making it the only reliable Security Software for a Mac.

Downloads:

  1. Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac
  2. Malwarebytes Uninstaller

Thanks. I ran the EtreCheck and now I will have to retrieve the report and figure how to send it. I don't actually know if there is malware/virus on my Mac. One problem is that it shuts down by itself and when I restart it there is a note on the screen that it shut down because of a problem. The report is several pages of stuff that means nothing to me. As I was trying to figure out that problem I discovered something called "kernel panic". This Mac is four years old, so, I have a new one on the way and don 't want to contaminate it.
