I got a new Apple TV 4K (from 2021)
and my MacBook Air m1

they are both signed to the same iCloud and both are on the same wifi network.
for Days I'm trying to turn the home sharing on but it keeps asking me to sign in - when I do its still never on.
always off.
its obviously frustrating and I hope someone here knows what can I do to switch it on!

The both need to be signed in with the same Apple ID account for Home Sharing. iCloud services are not relevant for this. Make sure that Media Sharing is turned On as well as Home Sharing. Try turning off then on Home Sharing to re-enter the Apple ID account for Home Sharing.

I ran into this and was able to get it turn on and stay on by checking ‘Share media with guests’. Terrible UI though. Also, shows on now, but still can’t see it on the network.
