iPod Clickwheel 4th Generation Restore

I have the 4th generation click wheel iPod, also known as the iPod with color display.  Model

number is A1099.  Seeking to restore this iPod after updating to a flash drive memory.

I’m using an older version of iTunes, which I like very much, on my Windows

10 computer and would like to keep this version.  However, when attempting to restore the iPod

after updating the drive I get the message “the iPod software update server

could not be contacted” which I feel is most likely due to the older version of

iTunes, as my internet connection works just fine.   Seeking a work-around to restore the iPod and still keep well-loved older version of iTunes.  Question: If, as suspected, the inability to restore due to “not being able to

contact the update server” is because of the older version of iTunes that I want to keep on my computer, can I install the most recent version of iTunes on another computer, restore my iPod using that version of iTunes (which hopefully can “contact the update server”) and then sync the restored iPod using my original

computer and the older version of iTunes?

So, I will answer my own question:  Yes, you can restore you old iPod after making modifications (such as installing a flash drive in place of the hard disc drive) using a new version of iTunes, and then return to you “home” computer and use your older favorite version of iTunes to still sync your music.  Note: I use my iPod solely as a music player and I don’t want a version of iTunes with all the games, movies and video stuff.  Here is what I did:  Replaced original 60gb HDD with 128gb iFlash card.  Apple wants to force you to newer versions of their software products, so I could not access the software update server to restore my iPod with my iTunes 10 version. Loaded iTunes 12 on a Windows laptop and it restored my iPod just fine.  Then went back to my home base desktop computer and synced 65gb of music to the new 128gb flash drive.  Very happy to have an updated iPod with solid state drive.
