The recording quality on my iMac microphone has suddenly become muffled. There is no visible obstruction of the microphone holes and I have not made recent changes to software or settings. The problem occurs across all apps.

I discovered the input volume had been turned down (in the sound settings). I did not turn it down, so that's still a mystery, but the problem is solved.
