Apple Watch shortcut 'remote exection timed out'

I have a simple shortcut set on my Apple Watch to set theatre mode on at 10pm and off at 7am. For the last few days I have been getting ‘remote execution timed out’ message. As far as I am aware, nothing has changed on my watch or iPhone. Any suggestions?

Please remember Apple has released a bunch of software updates recently, including an urgent patch iOS 16.4.1 which I found on Friday, but nothing for Apple Watch. Good Friday is a holiday for many around the world, so a software release would be unusual unless it was really urgent. This brings opportunities to introduce incompatibilities and glitches, so I suggest "worked fine until a couple of days ago" might tend to point suspicion at the latest iPhone patch (or it could be needed but missing).

There are a few things I would try at this point.

  1. Check your software update status and if any updates are offered, get them installed. (iPhone: Settings/General/Software Update). Then test again.
  2. Check software updates for Apple Watch (iPhone: Watch App, My Watch/General/Software Update).
  3. Delete your Shortcut / Automation. / Whatever you want to call it, as suggested above. Then rebuild it to have the best chance of glitch free with your current software versions.
  4. Try to remember if you have downloaded any other apps (App Store, etc) or changed any configuration which might be causing a conflict.

If that doesn't fix the problem, try to remember when (date) the problem appeared, and when you had installed software updates and patches. If it seems to be associated with software changes go to https://www.apple.com/feedback/ and file a bug report with as much detail as possible about the shortcut, and your current software versions.

Hello,

Welcome to the Apple Support Community.

A simple solution would be to check to see if there are any errors within the shortcut. If this is not the case, you might want to copy the iCloud link. To do this: Open the Shortcuts app > Click the three dots next to the desired shortcut > Go to Shortcut Settings > Scroll down to Share > Click on Share and look for Copy iCloud link.

After you have done this, paste the link somewhere where you can click on it later. Then, delete the Shortcut and click on the link to read it to your library. Then try running the shortcut again.

Another option would be to try and reconnect your iPhone and your Apple Watch. Then try running the shortcut again.

Thanks for the quick response. This is just an automation, rather than shortcut (I realise I’m not sure of the difference between shortcuts and automations). But it means that it doesn’t appear as a shortcut that I can copy as you suggest.

My watch and iPhone appear to be paired ok ( I can change the watch face from my phone).

It’s just a simple automation which switches cinema mode on at 10pm and off again at 7am. It worked fine until a couple of days ago.

Any suggestions gratefully received.
