AppleTV Hardware: TV App setting: top shelf ignored

Everyone knows that as far back as January, AppleTV OS 16.x forced the "TV" to show a bunch of AppleTV+ shows on the top row.

The settings distinctly have a setting for "Top Shelf" where you can switch between "Watch Now" and "Up Next"

The setting appears to do nothing. I've tried every permutation of opening, closing, swiping out and restarting (no reset).

I was notified of a new update on startup of the AppleTV 4k gen 2 that I use the most frequently (on my nicest tv) and it's the same as it has been.

Is this just wishful thinking that it will change/work the way it used to?

The "app" on my computers and iPad Pro seems slightly less annoying now, though I've always considers it a thinly veiled reskin of the "iTunes Store" through all of its rebranding.

I AM using the setting to save icons across devices but I don't think that has anything to do with it.

I've paid for the + service since it came out minus the free year I got but I'd like to stop pushing it up my nose. With the exception of Netflix refusing to play nicely with full interoperability, I've used the hardware happily otherwise.

My only surprise is that, searching, all the complaints online seem to be from January.

Can someone confirm this is just how it is or if it changed (for the better) and I'm going to have to suffer the drama and trauma of a full reset of 3 frequently used devices and 2 that I'll put off until a later date.

Thanks for any info.

That is for the Home Screen of the Apple TV box, not for inside the TV app.

You can let Apple know what you don’t like about the change, and/or how you would prefer it instead. Feedback - Apple TV App - Apple.

That seems to coincide with a tvOS update (16.2 or 16.3?). And that situation hasn’t changed since.

Resetting won’t change it, as that is no downgrade path. Also, some apps will need up-to-date system software, or they won’t work. The only way is forward (staying up-to-date for versions).

That is pretty useless.

I kind of figured it was here to stay until at very least the next UI overhaul (17) when someone has a "better" idea that may be . . . better.

I did fill out that form as soon as it, er broke.

Like Music on the iPhone, I guess hoping for playlists that you can set up on other devices is probably the best "ask".

I have so many movies in my library and the UI is so neglected that "details" view on the computer is the only decent way to group when I don't know what to watch.

I bought a Roku last year to see what the fuss was and couldn't believe 60% of the main screen was an ad.

It can always get worse :)
