Is AirPlay available on Ventura for M1 Mackbook Pro?

I was trying to connect with a monitor in a conference room at We Work but I couldn't find the AirPlay icon. The articles I've read explain how to turn on the AirPlay receiver but I need to broadcast to a monitor. It appears Apple has removed this from the OS. If I go to the control center and select Screen Mirroring, I can connect but the display is magnified to the point it's useless and it won't allow me to change the dimensions. Another person on an older Macbook had the Airplay icon and was able to easily connect.

Please tell me there's a solution. I hope this isn't some horrible 'upgrade' that the Apple engineers decided would be better for us.

Thanks, Don

You did not say want happens when you click the Airplay button on the Apple TV app? There is no AirPlay option to turn on or to change in settings(except for receiving in  > System Settings > General > Airplay & Handoff. The option to use AirPlay is dependent on what app you use. Some web pages allow video to be AirPlayed, while others don't.

The other option as you know is Screen Mirroring and probably the option you want unless you are playing a movie or video. When turned on, the screens will change to the same resolution. Have you tried opening the Display settings at  > System Settings > Displays and then activating Screen Mirroring using the "+" button. This should let you adjust the resolution/scale so the menu bar does not appear offscreen.

Hey there donmilo,

We want to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some other possible causes:

  1. While we understand that older Mac works without any issues, when did this start to occur with your own Mac?
  2. In what way are you able to use AirPlay with the external monitor, or is there an Apple TV device attached to it?
  3. If you're using a compatible Apple TV model, the latest version is tvOS 16.4.1. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to Update your Apple TV.
  4. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Shut down or restart your Mac
  5. The latest version for compatible models is macOS 13.3.1. While it's not necessary at this time to upgrade to a new macOS version, we see you have macOS 12.6, but the latest for that version is macOS 12.6.5. Is this the version installed currently? You can verify this by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then Update macOS on Mac.

Cheers!

Thanks for the response. Here are my answers inline:

  1. While we understand that older Mac works without any issues, when did this start to occur with your own Mac?

The older Mac is owned by a teammate. He has no problem in access AirPlay via the icon from the top row on his desktop. I don't seem to have the same option to add AirPlay via my settings. His Mac is not an M1.

2 - In what way are you able to use AirPlay with the external monitor, or is there an Apple TV device attached to it?

This is a monitor in a conference room in our WeWork office. You can connect via AirPlay. I can also connect via the 'screen mirroring' option in the Control Center but the display size is unusable.

3 - If you're using a compatible Apple TV model, the latest version is tvOS 16.4.1. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to Update your Apple TV.

This is not an Apple TV issue.

4 - Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart. Check out the section ‘Restart your Mac' here: Shut down or restart your Mac

Restarting did not help

I'm running 13.2.1

I connected to the monitor using Screen Mirroring but it would not allow me to adjust the displays.

This is what the display on the monitor looks like when I connect using Screen Mirroring. From here I'm unable to adjust the display.

The #1 question I have is: Did Apple remove the ability to launch Airplay from the Control Center for the M1 running 13.2.1? I think the answer is 'yes'. If the answer is 'yes', then it's an oversight by Apple and the software WeWork uses to connect with conference room monitors over WiFi is compatible with Screen Mirroring.

I have a LG TV and there is no issue when I mirror to it. I can also use it as a separate display. Apple TV and some web sites will AirPlay to it. That AirPlay option is in the apps only and not in my Control Center or Menubar. This is what my Display settings look like when connected as Screen Mirroring:

And this is what the Control Center looks like when Screen Mirroring is selected:

The one thing I'm not sure about is when you said "the software WeWork uses to connect with conference room monitors over Wifi"?

It sounds like we are on a similar operating system. The AirPlay option is an available app only and not in the control center.

I'll try to clarify. I'm on WeWork's WiFi and there are different ways to connect wirelessly to the monitors. You can join by using an IP address, AirPlay or via an app I downloaded "Solstice". When I tried using the Solstice app, it connected and the TV displayed a 4-digit code I typed into the app on my MacBook, however, the TV screen went blank.

I'm going to pass this along to the IT team at WeWork and see what they say.

Cheers, Don
