Can I turn my banners off on my phone but still get notifications on my watch while my phone is unlocked? I don’t want my messages to show on my phone while I have it unlocked but it seems they won’t go through my watch when I turn banners off.

The way its designed by Apple is if the phone screen is active, notifications arrive at the phone. If the phone screen is off (locked), notifications arrive at your Apple Watch. This is on purpose and by design.
