Time To Stand Reminder

The Time to Stand Reminder is excellent in that I use it to get up and stretch after sitting for awhile. Good for this older guy's body.

The thing is that the routine itself doesn't actually trigger if the user has been sitting for a long period of time. Looks to me like it triggers if the watch wearer is sitting at 50 minutes after the hour. For instance, I was standing at 9:45, talking to someone. Then had a seat a few minutes later. At 9:50, my watch reminded me that it was Time to Stand.

Just out of curiosity, can anyone verify that this is the way this routine works?

Thanks,

Neal

Thanks for the response. This has happened at several times, including incidents where I've been up for most of the hour and then sat down before the 50 minutes mark. The sensors on my Apple Watch (Series 8) seem to be very much aware of my vertical position-whether standing, sitting, or lying down.

It does look to me like the "pseudo-coding" for Time to Stand is:

IF (time = 50 minutes past the hour AND posture = seated)

display Time to Stand

END IF

I'd be interested in hearing what others have to say.

As the 'Stand' section in this article:

Use the Activity app on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

says:

"The Stand ring shows hours in which you've stood and moved for at least a minute. Complete your daily Stand goal by standing up and moving around for at least 1 minute during 12 different hours in the day. Even if you stand all day, you still need to move around to earn credit for standing."

The stand reminder is designed to work if your watch believes you haven't been moving for the first 50 minutes of an hour. So the reminder at 50 minutes into an hour is correct. And what I suspect is that you didn't move your arms enough when you were standing talking to someone. It bases it on arm movement, such as your arm swinging when you walk.

I tried your experiment twice, the first, walking up two flights of stairs at 2:45, and being seated at 2:49. Then again, wandering around my house at 4:32 and seated by 4:40. No reminder either time. So yeah, there is some logic going on. I'll have to look further, standing earlier in the hour. It just might be the case that when I standing, I wasn't standing for a whole minute or something.

I used to be a software developer before I retired, that's why I noticed this issue. 😀

Thank you for trying my suggestion. It's all based on movement. If the watch doesn't think you've really moved enough, you'll get a stand reminder. And as you've now verified, if the watch thinks you have moved enough, you won't. And when it says Stand, it really means move. To validate that, next time you get a stand reminder, start walking and swing your arms. Soon, you'll get a notification that you did it, letting you know you've been active enough for that hour. Or at least me the minimum requirement for being active.
