Touch ID doesn't work on MacBook Air 2

I have a new MacBook Air. After a few months, the Touch ID has stopped working. I have tried shutting down and restarting the computer; and I have tried resetting the ID many times, using different fingers. It still doesn't respond.

(I have been to my local Genius Bar. It was they that recommended the rebooting and resetting I mentioned above. So, no help there.)

Hello cjbruce2015,

Thank you for posting to the Apple Support Communities.

You can test these Touch ID features after starting your Mac in safe mode. This can help rule out any startup software that could be causing an issue: Start up your Mac in safe mode

You can also use the Apple Diagnostics to check for any hardware issues that may require a repair: Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac. If a hardware issue is found, please contact Apple Support directly for more help with creating a service appointment.

All the best!

JJRASC: Thank you for your response. I tried starting up my Mac in Safe Mode, but when I reached step 4, and pressed and held the Shift key, nothing happened. (I have Chip Apple M2, so I used the silicon instructions.)

So, I tried running Apple Diagnostics. The response was that Apple was unable to find any problems.

Can you suggest why starting in Safe Mode did not work?
