Gmail badge count only appears after I open the app. No badge count shown regardless of pending messages until I open the app.
This was a topic here back in 2022 and resolved itself August 2022, but it's back again.
Any advice?

It's the Gmail App. There was a 9 page discussion starting January 2022 about this exact problem here in Apple Discussions and continuing until August 2022.

In that discussion, the problem appeared exactly after an update to iOS 15.
It is not clear here whether you have Gmail on the iOS mail app or you have Gmail App.
Google Mail is not an Apple product. Contact the app developer here --> App Support or Gmail Help - Google Support
