Group messages turned green after accidentally texting 1 member on landline

Hey All,

i have a long lasting group chat which is iMessage enabled.

i accidentally texted 1 individual member on her land line, which of course failed.

but since then, I receive group messages but cannot send them anything. iPhone seems to constantly try to use the landline for that contact, turning my text in the conversation in green.

i tried to:

  • contact all individuals on their iMessage number/address: success (even for the one I accidentally used the land line with)
  • remove all « non iMessage » contact details from all participants, in my contact details: Group chat remains green!
  • start a new conversation with my participants, selecting the « blue » contact detail: switches green!
  • delete the entire conversation and start a new one: green again!

im certain that all participants are iMessage enabled, I’m chatting with them separately. How can I force a fresh conversation « in iMessage mode » with them?

thanks!

Hi junkan,

If you haven't already, you may want to try deleting the message thread and then creating it again. You'll want to screenshot any messages you wish to keep: Take a screenshot on your iPhone - Apple Support

Should the issue persist after trying that, we suggest you contact Apple Support so that they can look into this with you further. You can reach them here: Apple Support

Take care.

Hi junkan,

You've already taken some great isolating steps on this issue, however can you confirm the following?

  • You are able to chat with each recipient individually using iMessage? Its only this one specific group with the issue?
  • If you have another group chat that is iMessage enabled, does that one still work as expected?
  • Is your iPhone fully updated? Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support
  • Toggle iMessage off under Settings > Messages, wait a moment and then toggle it back on again.

Should the issue persist, let us know the additional details requested, we'll determine our next steps from there.

Cheers!

Many thanks! I confirm:

  • each individual recipient is OK with iMessage, and with the same contact details
  • other group chats with iMessage work fine
  • phone fully up to date
  • I had disabled and re-enabled

i really think that something went wrong when a few days ago, I contacted 1 recipient on the land line. Since then, something is off…

Thanks a lot.

i can confirm, after deleting the thread and initiating a new one, it went OK.

i know it won’t help, but deleting an old history is never a pleasant thing to do… and imagining going through years of chats to take screenshots is smth à I gave up on 😅

but it happens, and it’s fixed!

thanks!

If saving text conversations is important to you, I'd suggest investing an an application such as iMazing or TouchCopy which will archive the messages to your computer as either pdf or text files. A real lifesaver for me.
