My MacBook Pro is having issues with the sound system

My MacBook Pro is having issues with the sound system. The built-in speakers are not an option in settings -> output. What do I need to do?

It really helps to know the exact model of the Mac involved. You can get this information by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac". Posting the version of macOS is usually a good idea as well.

Some older Macs can have the headphone jack fail where the Mac thinks headphones are connected which causes macOS not to see/show the internal speakers in the Sound Output System Preferences. Play some audio and look into the headphone jack to see whether a red light is seen which would indicate a bad headphone jack. I believe this only happens with the non-Retina models and older MBAirs.
