Face ID iPad Pro

Is there a way to avoid up-swipe on my iPad Pro M1 after Face ID recognized me?

it’s so annoying!

I wish I bought an iPad Air with Touch ID.

Just like I’m used on my android smartphone!

I just rest my finger on the power button and I’m in!

I’m already annoyed that when I lay on the sofa I have to tilt the whole iPad to get recognized..

let’s not talk about face mask..

then I still need to swipe up!

I don’t know how many ti,ed a day.

Apple, please just ad an option to go directly to the home screen.

Trust me, I have thought this through. I’m an industrial designer!

And please get 5is keyboard working.. it drives me nuts.. can’t correct the simplest typos…

I left the typos intentionally . So you can understand.

I have 3 languages set.. but can’t see which one is active in the moment.

Very easy to switch acidently. Very hard to catch which one is active.

just do show it.. or make the keyboard smart like Google.

I can switch langue’s while typing and the keyboard gets it anyway.

I came back to apple after years .. last iPhone was 4s..

I start to be really disappointed…. :-(

I hope any UX designer at Apple is reading this…

Thank for the exhaustive reply.

I will definitely look into giving feedback right back to Apple.

thanks also for that.

hoping somebody will listen.

I indeed thought that somebody at Apple would be aware of users asking for this feature one way or the other, as I think they do constant user research.

just check on you tube about unlocking iPhones..

as a matter of fact I did start my post with a request of help:

”Is there a way to avoid up-swipe on my iPad Pro M1 after Face ID recognized me?”.

As nobody is perfect, I thought I might have missed a way to do just that.

Without writing a lot more words..

I just wish Apple implements a simple switch in in Face ID settings that says:

Unlock directly to Home Screen”.

VERY simple.

You say I’m not aware of so many implications and mechanics of Touch ID and Face ID etc.

You gave me no background about your area of expertise.

as I sayed, mine is industrial design, and besides that, I think am a good observer and critical thinker.

you might take into consideration to read about Design Thinking and UX design.

It simply doesn’t work to say, the user is too dumb to get how it works.

If there lots of people complaining and wishing not for a change, but for a simple addition featurek let’s say a choice, then a company should look into that.

you replayed to NONE of my observations:

  • different users have different needs
  • an ipad is not an oversized iPhone so we have a different situation (please just think of how you unlock a Mac! Is there a second step required after password?

just to make some examples..

this is an open discussion.

I for sure respect your opinion.

I hope you respect mine.

I for sure I wish I could convince you to try to understand some of my points of view.

in the end I would just ask:

how would Steve Jobs want to unlock his iPad to check his emails?

unlock or unlock plus swipe?

I think he would say:

“I look on the screen and Boom, I’m in!”

cheers

I admit I had a bit of a rant yesterday, but I was just too annoyed…

I try to break it up as simple as possible:

I did a brief research about that Lock Screen notifications and the marvelous things you can do..

But what if I don’t care about that?

and lots of other people feel the same!

I can get notifications by a simple swipe down..

here is my opinion:

there zillions of things in our digital life that distract you from the main task at hand.

so when I have something in mind and I just want to DO THAT and not get distracted I just wish I can do that!

so Unlockig my iPad should be a one step process.

just as I already have on my smartphone!

my android phone can do Face ID AND Touch ID!

most of the time I use the latter.

to check time and notifications I just double tap the screen.

yeah it ,igut unlock with my face.. but often it layers on the table and it doesn’t..

and I can still switch of face if if I want.

so..

Something that should take just one step becomes two step and the device even wants to distract me from what I’m doing..

I don’t like that.

ok.. someone might like that.. but if you know about UI UX design you should know that it is user centered.

so for me it’s fine, but just ADD a simple switch in the settings where I can choose whether to just unlock the device and get to my Home Screen or stop to stare at the Lock Screen.

as I see in fast web search that I’m not the only one.. Probably sooner or later Apple will add this, but in the meantime I have to wait.

I'm just trying to speed up progress!

there are even workarounds with iPhone back double taps to create automated unlocking.

so this IS a user need!

sadly I can’t do that on my iPad…

on an iPhone I can even understand that you need a protection for unintentional unlocking!

but my iPad is not an oversized iPhone!

I have a cover!

So step one is to open the cover (or Double tap the screen, yes Apple allows this second option to be activated! Incredible!).

second I unlock via Face ID. (And often I have to reorientate my iPad to do that).

it can’t get MORE intentional than that!

so no protection needed!

you see, I did my homework before filing my complaint!

I also try to apply logic..

and probably the basic rules of UI design.

  1. everything should be as streamlined as possible. No unnecessary steps.
  2. there should be just one simple and elegant way to do things

BUT the user interface should be adaptable to personal needs!

Apple implemented this slowly over the years, instead of forcing their view (as they did in the past), but I think there is still a lot to improve!

Thanks for joining the discussion.

I hope I made myself clear now!

Perhaps you also need to understand that the Apple Support Community is a user-to-user technical forum. Other than the site Moderators, who ensure that contributors abide by the site Terms of Use, Apple neither monitor nor participate here. Contributors here are all end-users, just like you. Of regular contributors here, while having no direct affiliation with Apple, some are themselves experienced systems engineers, designers and IT professionals.

Given that Apple do not participate here, your complaint will completely miss its perceived intended audience. However, Apple does invite submission of constructive comments and feature requests via its Product Feedback portal. If you have any comments that you wish to share with Apple and its Developers, this would be the most appropriate channel to make your feelings known:

Product Feedback - Apple

Returning to FaceID and its implementation, given that you have (by your own description) returned to Apple ownership after some time, perhaps consider that iPad and iPhone have progressed considerably in both hardware and software in recent years. FaceID is a proprietary technology available only to some advanced models of iPad and iPhone. Due to fundamental differences in implementation from TouchID - and similar fingerprint biometric authentication found on other brands of device - you will encounter minor accommodations that are necessary to maintain consistency with core system functionality.

As I hope to have previously outlined, there are many factors that you may not have considered - in part though inexperience of the current implementation, features, capabilities and extended functionality of recent devices and hardware.

For practical purposes, in comparing TouchID and FaceID, both biometric authenticators require touch of either the screen (FaceID) or the associated sensor (TouchID) to progress past the Lock Screen. Other than the authenticator being used, functionally, the UI is no different.

If TouchID and associated functionality better fit your need, there are many models of iPad that may better suit your requirements.

Unlike the Apple UI Designers, perhaps you haven’t considered all the implications…

For modern devices, your Lock Screen can be [and by many users is intentionally] configured to display specific Widgets and/or Notifications while the device remains locked.

If the Lock Screen was immediately dismissed by FaceID without the corresponding swipe of which you complain, any information visible on the iPad Lock Screen will not be seen by the owner of the device. For the owner, with registered FaceID, simply waking the device (while in view of the camera) would instantly blast-past the Lock Screen view - without any opportunity to see or read information displayed on the Lock Screen.

By contrast, TouchID or Passcode authentication behave a little differently…

For TouchID or Passcode entry, simply waking the device will show the static Lock Screen and any information displayed thereon - until such time as the User actually touches the TouchID sensor, or manually enters the device Passcode. Only after intentional authentication will the Lock Screen be automatically dismissed from view.

In conclusion, devices with FaceID require the upward-swipe after unlocking the device - as this additional step ensures that information displayed on the Lock Screen will always be visible until intentionally dismissed from view.
