How to transfer photos from iPhone to mac with favorite status retained without using icloud?
using Apple Photos.
all OS up to date.

It is not possible without iCloud. When you download the photos directly from the iPhone, the unmodified original will be transferred, not the metadata we add to the photos. Only iCloud Photos will sync all metadata and adjustments, the albums, all our work between our devices.

When you download the photos from the iPhone all metadata added by the camera will be included, the location, the capture date, even the filters set by the camera, but not the the metadata and albums added in Photos.
As a work-around, wait with the tagging of favorites until you have transferredthe photos to your Mac, if you do not want to use iCloud Photos.
Thank you - but I believe the metadata of the photos (e.g. locations) should be transferred over from iPhone to Mac as well? and I note that the modified version of the photos on my iPhone seems to have transferred over too?
Do you have a suggested way to work around this? like using a smart album or the like? I just am not creative and knowledgeable enough to think of a solution! I also don't understand why such a crucial function is only exclusive to iCloud. I have many favourite photos I wouldn't want to manually mark again on my Mac!
