I recently upgraded to Ventura 13.3.1 and now Apple Mail is opening multiple Untitled windows which I am unable to close. I have tried Force Quit but the problem persists. The rogue windows minimise but won't close by clicking the close box, using Command W or selecting the menu option. They are completely unresponsive.

Issue resolved! I started up in Safe Mode and found a previously unseen 'Outbox' folder in the sidebar. I deleted the unsent email in this folder and, hey presto, all is back to normal.

Hi. Thanks for taking the time to reply. In fact, I'd already deleted the plist file and it didn't help. I found the source of the problem when I did a Safe Boot, opened Mail and found a previously hidden mailbox called Outbox, containing a rogue unsent email I'd tried sending using Mail Drop. I deleted this and everything is now working as it should. Thanks again though!

Thank you for this insight. This was also the source of the problem with me. For some reason an email got stuck in the Outbox, causing this problem. Removing the email from the Outbox was the solution. I tried the solution with the "preference list" as documented below, but that didn't help.
Check in Mail >> Trash ( Bin ) in Mail

This type of specific e-mail in the Trash ( Bin ) seems to be to reason " Mail is opening multiple untitled windows "
At least, this has been the cause from several users I have assisted with this issue

This is definitely a bug in the Mail app as I'm getting exactly the same problem (multiple untitled windows) after I tried to send a 50MB .MOV file using mail drop. This is despite running the latest Mac OS and Mail app versions.
I have the same issue but in safe mode boot I cannot see an outbox directory.
I tried to delete the com.apple.mail.plist but no way.
In safe mode the problem is not present.

This worked for me.
Same problem. It opens multiple untitled windows that are unresponsive. They can be minimised but not shut,. I have reinstalled Sonoma 14.3 and it is still doing it.
Same bug now under 13.6.1.: Apple Mail is opening multiple (10+) untitled windows which are impossible to close.
