red dotted line in find my app

Had my wife’s phone lost on cruise ship while in port. It ultimately was found on board. But during the panic, I got data that was confusing with red dotted lines to locations off the ship, what did that mean? I can’t find any info anywhere on red dotted lines.

The red dots are the positions when the location of the device was updated. The dotted lines simply connect the dots to visualize where it might be moving while lost. This could be GPS data, wifi locations, etc. If you were pinging on board WiFi, it may show external locations of the network or the approximate address where the network provider is housed.
