Incompatible Mini DV camera capture with iMovie

My Sony DCR-TRV22 is not compatible with iMovie. Is there an input/output device I can use between the camera and MacBook Pro to get my Mini DV recordings into iMovie?

Your camera uses a Firewire cable to transfer the video but MacBook Air computers have never had Firewire sockets.

The early ones used USB which is not compatible whilst the later ones had Thunderbolt ports.

If you have Thunderbolt ports you can buy very expensive Apple adapters to convert Firewire to Thunderbolt but depending on the age of your Mac you may need 2 different adapters and there is no guarantee they will work.

If you only have USB ports you can buy a cheap USB converter (£10 upwards) off Amazon but you won't get the same quality as importing via Firewire.

This is the kind of gizmo I am referring to but I must stress that I have never used one so cannot comment about how effective they are.

This one at twice the price appears to have much better reviews.
