I like to take group pictures of my entire family, when they visit. I turn the camera around on my IPad Air, but the pictures are always grainy & the faces aren’t clear. Why is that & what can I do?

Your iPad Air3 has a 7MP front-facing camera - whereas the rear-facing main camera has a better resolution 8MP camera. For this reason alone, with lower resolution, your front-facing camera will produce lower quality images; if zoomed or cropped, the effective resolution is proportionally reduced, making the image even less sharp.
The only way to improve image quality is to change your iPad for a model with better (higher resolution) cameras - or simply use a better camera to shoot photos.
If you only intend to use your iPad, be aware that many newer models of iPad benefit from having 12MP cameras.
