iPad data sim used in iPhone physical sim slot ~ Australian Optus.

For all the Aussie Tech Heads out there.

Question: I have an iPad Pro 12.9 M2 5G on Optus service. This service from Optus comes with a mobile phone number but as in iPad obviously I don’t actually use the number. My iPhone is also on Optus on eSim.

If I put the physical sim from my iPad into my iPhone using physical slot will it work as normal extra line service? Does the fact that the iPad sim was bought as a data service make any difference? It comes with a mobile number so I’m assuming it doesn’t. But hopefully somebody has experience of this.

note: on a previous iPhone I have had my main Optus on eSim line and had an extra physical sim line from a different phone service which worked fine. They were both mobile phone services.

thank you and looking forward to any help. I could just ask Optus but I know they will say no you can’t.

The SIM card that was assigned to your iPad only has data service. If you insert it in your iPhone, then you will not be able to make or receive calls on the iPad's phone number. The data service may work with your iPhone, however, your iPad service provider's system may recognize that you are using the service on your iPhone instead of your ipad and therefore may suspend service altogether.

Whenever I visit the USA I use a physical SIM that only has a data plan (Google FI) enabled. It does have a Phone number and I can't use that to call or message anyone.
