Loss of ITunes from a Windows 10 PC - April 2023

I have used iTunes for years on my Windows 10 pc but today the iTunes icon is missing from the desktop and I cannot find iTunes listed in the programs. I found music tracks in a Windows folder and they will play on Windows music player. There was an iTunes updates in the last week or so. I wonder if it's connected. How do I get iTunes back?

Windows, Windows 10

I started downloading iTunes again but then got a warning - your previous iTunes software will need to be removed to allow this iTunes download to proceed.

This confirms my original iTunes is still on the pc but I cannot see it. I would much prefer to find the original iTunes. Has anyone got any ideas how I can find it, bearing in mind there is nothing on the Taskbar, the Desktop, Windows Start program list or Search facility, or Control Panel list of programs.

What tends to happen with an update to iTunes is that the icon on the Windows Taskbar turns white and no longer works.

However, there is usually an iTunes icon on the Desktop that continues to work, although I notice that you say that yours does not work. Note that the Desktop (the Windows screen without any programmes covering it, and with a few icons, usually on the left side) is specifically different to the Taskbar (the bar, usually along the bottom of the screen where the Windows "squares" icon is located). If the Taskbar icon is there but white and not working, make sure that you look for the iTunes icon on the Desktop itself.

If that suggestion fails to fix the issue, the next thing to try is to go to the Windows Start icon and then scroll down to iTunes folder. Tap the folder to open it and iTunes should be there:

The other thing you can do is type iTunes into the Search box (seen in the screenshot). If iTunes is installed, it should open it.

If none of these suggestions work, that implies that iTunes is no longer installed on your computer, which seems unlikely. iTunes would not uninstall itself. There was a recent update to 12.12.8.2 released on 29th March 2023, but as stated, it would not uninstall iTunes, although it would stop the Taskbar icon from working.

  • If you do have a non-working white icon on your Taskbar, you can right-click it and select Unpin from Taskbar
  • To add a replacement icon on your Taskbar, either:
    • left-click-and-drag the Desktop iTunes icon to the Taskbar
    • go into the Programmes menu and right-click the iTunes icon (that I've arrowed in the screenshot above), and select More/Pin to taskbar

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. When reinstalling right click on the downloaded setup file and use run as administrator. It may also help to temporarily disable any non-Microsoft anti-virus.

Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, or want to revert to an older version if the current one won't work properly for you at the moment. Links to the most recent builds are now at the bottom of the page.

Your library and device backups should be unaffected by these steps but there are links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

Thank you the fiend

I have already checked and cannot see iTunes on the Taskbar, the Desktop and it's not visible in the Windows Start Icon list of programs. That's why I am so stumped by this. Nobody has had access to my pc except my wife and myself and neither of us have uninstalled iTunes but it looks like it's gone. I have not used it for a while so don't know when it happened.

The actual music tracks seem to be still available in the Windows Music Folder - see screen print.

I am thinking I may have to download iTunes program again but I don't know how to Import the Music Files content to iTunes?
