Compatible Scanner

One that is supported (without scanner vendor drivers) by the paid (free trial) VueScan Professional, so you retain functionality when the scanner vendor abandons driver support for it.

I have owned VueScan Professional since 2010 and never paid an upgrade fee since. It still drives a Canon flatbed scanner that was abandoned by Canon prior to 2010 and does so on my new M2 Mac mini Pro running Ventura 13.3.1. I have never received any compensation or benefits from the VueScan vendor for its recommendation here.

If you have an iPhone, I also recommend using the Continuity Camera. To do this open Notes, open a note and press the top button of two photos with an arrow. Next, press "Scan documents", take your iPhone and scan the document. Decide when to shoot and save.
